The trial of Saadi Gaddafi, third son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been adjourned by a Tripoli court. Saadi has been awaiting trial for two years.
“At the request of the defense team who could not attend the hearing, the trial of Saadi Gaddafi was postponed to 2 October,” an official of the detention center where he is held told AFP.
Saadi Gaddafi, 42, is on trial for his alleged involvement in the bloody suppression of the revolt that caused the fall and death of his father Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
The trial has been postponed a number of times even though the accused appeared before the court, which sits in the prison of al-Hadba al-Khadra where he is detained.
Saadi was extradited from Niger on March 6, 2014.
He is also on trial for the 2005 murder of a former coach of the football club Al-Ittihad of Tripoli, Bachir Rayani.
His other brother Seif al-Islam has also been in the news lately with his lawyer claiming that he had been released on an amnesty arrangement. The splinter government that holds him in the town of Zintan however denied the claims a day after.
According to the Zintan officials, the amnesty decreed in April 2016, cannot be applied to those accused of crimes against humanity like Seif al-Islam Gaddafi.
Seif was sentenced to death in July 2015 by a court in Tripoli for his role in the murderous repression of the 2011 rebellion.
Of the seven sons of Gaddafi, three died during the 2011 revolution that led to the death of their father, who was killed by rebels.
